From Talcher College to Student Politics
Born on June 26, 1969, in Talcher, Odisha, Pradhan studied at Talcher College, where he was elected president of the college students’ union. He later joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, commonly known as the ABVP.
His rise within the organisation was closely connected to student issues. According to The New Indian Express, Pradhan played a leading role in protests against Odisha’s then Congress government following a Class 12 board examination paper leak in 1996.
This period established his reputation as an organiser and activist capable of mobilising students around education-related concerns.
Pradhan later completed a master’s degree in Anthropology from Utkal University. Politics also had a strong presence in his family. His father, Debendra Pradhan, was associated with the RSS, joined the BJP in 1980 and later served as a Union minister.
Rise Within the BJP
Over the years, Dharmendra Pradhan emerged as an influential figure within the Bharatiya Janata Party. He represented Bihar and Madhya Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha and later became the Lok Sabha MP from Sambalpur in Odisha.
He was also entrusted with important organisational responsibilities during elections in states including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. His organisational experience reportedly contributed to the BJP’s historic victory in Odisha in 2024.
Before taking charge of the Education Ministry in July 2021, Pradhan handled several major portfolios, including Petroleum and Natural Gas, Steel, and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
A Difficult Period as Education Minister
As Education Minister, Pradhan became one of the main public faces promoting the National Education Policy 2020. The policy aims to restructure several aspects of school and higher education in India.
However, his tenure was increasingly overshadowed by controversies involving competitive examinations, particularly alleged paper leaks and irregularities surrounding the NEET examination.
For students, such examinations often determine access to professional courses and future career opportunities. The repeated controversies therefore created widespread anger and raised serious questions about the security, transparency and accountability of India’s examination system.
Weeks of student-led demonstrations eventually intensified the political pressure on Pradhan. On July 25, 2026, he resigned as Union Education Minister following protests demanding that responsibility be fixed for examination failures.

Pradhan’s resignation carries strong political symbolism. He entered public life by protesting a board examination paper leak and ultimately left the Education Ministry amid another movement centred on examination irregularities.
His journey highlights how student activism can influence Indian politics from both sides: it can create political leaders, but it can also hold powerful leaders accountable.
The resignation may have ended one chapter, but the larger questions remain. Students continue to demand stronger safeguards against paper leaks, transparent investigations, fair examination systems and accountability from institutions responsible for managing career-defining tests.
Ultimately, the controversy is bigger than the career of one minister. It is about whether India can create an examination system that deserves the confidence of millions of students and their families.
