Delhi's Air Quality Hits Hazardous Levels: Smog Forces Emergency Action

On Monday morning 11/18/2024, Delhi was enveloped in a thick, toxic blanket of smog, as air pollution levels reached alarming highs. According to Swiss air technology firm IQAir, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) readings ranged from 1,300 to 1,600, marking the air as 'hazardous'. In response to this severe crisis, authorities activated Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to combat the rapidly deteriorating air quality.

Delhi is a high pollution zone

The smog was so dense that multiple areas in the capital experienced AQI levels well beyond the 'severe' category, with readings crossing 1,500 in some parts. The most affected neighborhoods included:

  • Mundka: 1,591
  • Dwarka Sector-8: 1,497
  • Rohini: 1,427
  • Najafgarh: 1,396

In these areas, the air quality was classified as 'severe-plus', which poses serious health risks, especially for vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions. The pollution is attributed to a combination of factors, including vehicle emissions, crop burning in nearby states, and unfavorable weather conditions that trap pollutants in the air.

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and wear masks if they must go outside. The government is also stepping up efforts to control pollution and reduce the smog, but with air quality deteriorating rapidly, immediate measures are essential for public health and safety.
